Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
